THIS WEEK IN KIWANIS
CLUB of DOWNERS GROVE
Kiwanis Doings
Kiwanis Motto: Serving the Children of the World

January 24, 2007

We had 8 members in attendance today, and the following general business items were discussed:

- Membership Roundtable will take place on February 28th. Please invite potential members to this meeting. If you are bringing guests, please let Waring/Ellen know so we have places set, food, etc.

- The Downers Grove Community Grants Committee approved a $600 grant to support the 2008 Easter Candy Hunt. Our appreciation is extended to the DGCGC and to Paul Jarosz for his continued commitment to this event. - We are in need of a Peanut Day Chairperson. Please see Waring if you are interested.

- March 25th is the 60th anniversary of the Downers Grove Kiwanis Club. Celebration activities will be discussed in the weeks ahead. Our speaker today was Officer Harry Andler of the Downers Grove Community Policing Program. We support this program with donations towards the Fishing Derby, and other activities. Last year they used funds from Kiwanis to hire the Jesse White Tumblers for their holiday party. The policing program started in 1993 with 3 officers. Through grant funding they were able to increase the number of officers to 6, but they are no longer receiving all the grant funding, and they are currently back to 3 officers. The mission of the policing program is to remove the barrier between the community and the police department. They have established a resource center at Autumn Grove Apartments where students can come and get help with homework, and interact with the officers. There are currently about 35 kids ranging from 2nd to 8th grade who regularly come to the resource center. Other activities include Halloween and Christmas parties, other special events like seeing the Harlem Globetrotters and Disney on Ice.
The same three community policing officers also respond to all domestic violence calls. The relationship they have built with the kids in the policing program plays an important role if they later need to respond to a domestic violence call at that child's house. They received 200 domestic violence calls last year. These calls were for throughout Downers Grove, not just where the community policing program is active.

Upcoming Speakers:

January 31st - Jillian Smallwood, American Cancer Society February 7th - Committee meetings
February 14th - Team 58 Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Referendum Committee
