THIS WEEK IN KIWANIS
CLUB of DOWNERS GROVE
Kiwanis Meeting Doings
Kiwanis Motto: Serving the Children of the World
January 31, 2007

Good Morning. Today we had 8 members at our meeting.

Doyle has returned from the Dominican Republic. If you'll recall, Doyle travels to the Dominican Republic each year with the Kids Alive International Organization. They worked on the last building for the children's home. There are 70-75 kids living in the buildings they have built. For more information on Kids Alive you can go to www.kidsalive.org It's good to have Doyle back!

We were also happy to see Jack Crotty at our meeting this morning. Jack has been very busy moving into his new condo in Indian Head Park.

Waring passed out a Kiwanis New Member Proposal. If you have someone you would like to invite on February 28th for our membership breakfast, please complete the form and return to Waring. If you are thinking of someone you would like to invite, but don't feel comfortable asking that person Waring will send out an invitation from the club. A copy of the form is attached.

The 60th Anniversary of the Downers Grove Kiwanis Club is March 25, 2007. A celebration dinner is scheduled for 3/27/07. Plans are still being developed. Don Young suggested we invite former Evening Club members since it is the Evening Club's charter we assumed when our two clubs merged. Everybody agreed that former Evening Club members should be invited along with any former member, and some LaGrange members since they were the sponsor when the DG club was established.

Other brief pieces of business include:
- Still looking for a Peanut Day Chair
- A reminder from Waring to please wear name tags at the meeting
- Paul, Waring and Lorie met Monday night to work on the Kiwanis brochure. We would like it ready for the February 28th membership meeting
- Next Tuesday is the Board Meeting at Stevens Restaurant

Our speaker this morning was Jillian Smallwood from the American Cancer Society, DuPage Area Office. Jillian spoke to us about a new program the ACS is offering cancer patients. It's called Patient Navigation Service (PNS). This is a program that offers free transportation to cancer patients to and from the hospital for their treatments. The program is carried out by volunteers who donate their time and personal vehicles to assist patients with transportation. Volunteers have flexible schedules, and can choose an area or hospital that they are willing to drive to. Volunteers must attend a training session, and must sign a 'Volunteer Driver Application' form, which gives permission to release a copy of their DMV records to the American Cancer Society. If you, or someone you know might be interested in volunteering please call Jillian Smallwood at 630/932-1141.

Jillian also handed out a pamphlet about Relay for Life. The date this year is June 15-16, and it will be held once again at Downers Grove North High. She said that Kiwanis could set up a table that night and pass out our literature, or maybe the club could put a team together this year.

Our speaker for February 14th is Tim McJoynt of Team 58, Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Referendum Committee.

That's it for this week. Thanks for reading and see you next Wednesday for committee meetings.

Lorie

Thanks. Lorie for the quick updates. Enjoy them.

Let's not forget our All Youth Relay for Life at South High --heavily manned by our Key Clubbers who will have a team or two. It will be May 19-20 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. We could really use Kiwanis help on the 19th collecting $$--much to be counted and tallied around 5 p.m. for a few hours as the kids who are participating arrive. Kiwanians could also help with Security on the track and in the Tent City throughout the event.

I will arrange for the Relay committee chairs to speak at a meeting in the spring. Then we can also support the event by buying luminaria, stars and moons to honor loved ones. These are hung up around the school.

If anyone has anything they'd like to donate from your business etc., they'd love to have it--especially FOOD! If we know of Survivors, they'd like to invite them to the Survivor lap which opens the event as well.

Thanks, See you soon...............Gretchen
