At today's meeting we had two speakers regarding the upcoming District 58 referendum.
Our first speaker set was from District 58, Paul Zaander, Deputy
Superintendent, and Kristine Liptrot, Coordinator of Community
Relations. They supplied members with information outlining why the
referendum is needed, and how the money will be used (roofs,
maintaining facilities, technology & maintaining current programs).
They stated that it's been 51 years since the District sought a tax
rate increase. They showed what's happening in surrounding districts,
many have had referendums over the past 5 years. They also stated that
the financial projections they are using to determine the need have
been verified by two selected outside sources.
The second speaker was Scott O'Connell, a Downers Grove resident, and
District 58 school board candidate. He presented information showing
that the tax rate increase is not needed. He stated that the District
is not providing the community with complete and accurate information.
After reviewing the projections, Scott does not believe a tax rate
increase is warranted.
